Cigarette branded packaging may go up in smoke

admin | March 8, 2009

UK members of parliament are looking to remove branded packaging including brand symbols and possible brand marks from cigarette packaging, if passed, the new bill will require cigarettes to be sold in plain non branded packaging, this would mean that the colour and shape of the packaging and whether any trademarks or brand labels could be displayed on cigarette packaging would all be dictated by the bill.

There are currently no other forms of advertising for cigarettes allowed in the UK, other than branded packaging and as such cigarette companies are concerned that they will not be able to assist their customers to distinguish and differentiate their cigarette brand from their competitors brands.

If the bill is passed concerns have been voiced by manufacturers of alcohol, fast food and confectionery who fear that this type of ban may initiate bans on various other product lines.
