Well to get the ball rolling on this fun, exiting topic called: marketing We decided to write a series of blog posts rather than writing one long drawn out post, as we have so much information to share with you and as such we are going to separate these posts into a series of blogs on marketing.

The initial series will provide an overview, a brief introduction into marketing, for the blog series thereafter we will start to look at marketing in more detail with a strong emphasis on business marketing and in particular marketing tips for small business.

We are going to start by defining precisely what marketing actually is, to highlight the benefits/importance of marketing as well as to provide an overview of some of the core fundamentals of marketing namely the 4P’s & the 2 C’s.So let’s start by defining precisely what marketing actually is?

There are many definitions of marketing out there, so we thought it best to provide a couple of definitions that succinctly summarise exactly what marketing is, we selected the definitions of 2 of the most profound marketing establishments as well as a marketing definition provided by one of the marketing/management gurus of all time.

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)based in the UK define marketing as follows: Marketing is the management process that identifies, anticipates & satisfies customer requirements profitably.

Kotler defines marketing as the social process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and exchanging products and value with others.

Marketing as defined by the American Marketing Association: Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders.

As you can see from the above definitions, marketing is very much based upon customers and being able to recognise that customers have needs, identifying these needs and also working to predict and foresee future needs, so basically ensuring that you get to know all you can about your customers and ensuring that you are always one step ahead of the game by conducting regular research on your business, your product or service, your market and your competitors.

Marketing addresses what is known as the 4 P’s namely Price, Product, Promotion & Place as well as the 2 C’s namely your customers as well as your competition.

Over the next 6 weeks we will look at each of the 4P’s and the 2C’s by going into a bit more detail about each of these core marketing fundamentals and providing you with definitions and explanations about each of them.

So until the next post Sayonara and don’t forget to  log in to receive the next blog post where we will be tackling head on the very first of the 4 P’s and that is the P for ?, well you will have to log in or subscribe to find out.
